I’m Dave — motorcycles have shaped much of my life. I’m a Motorcycle Rider Coach, retired police motorcycle officer, and crash survivor who has spent years helping riders become safer, smarter, and more confident on the road.
But some of my greatest lessons didn’t come from teaching.
They came from surviving.
In 2014, while working as a police motorcycle officer, my life changed instantly when I was struck from behind at highway speed by a distracted driver while riding my police Harley-Davidson.
The crash nearly killed me.
I suffered catastrophic injuries, spent weeks on life support, multiple weeks in a coma, endured numerous surgeries, and faced a recovery doctors believed might leave me unable to ever ride again… or even walk normally.
But through the grace of God, determination, and an incredible support system…
I survived.
And after a long recovery, I did what many believed would never happen.
I got back on a motorcycle.
That experience forever changed the way I view riding, safety, life, and the responsibility we all carry every time we throw a leg over a bike.
Years later, I became a certified Motorcycle Rider Coach, helping riders develop skills that could one day save their lives.
Because I know firsthand just how quickly everything can change.
Why I Created This Channel
I created The Road Taught Me because I wanted to build something deeper than a typical motorcycle channel.
This isn’t just about motorcycles.
It’s about the lessons the road teaches us — becoming better riders, understanding risk and responsibility, and embracing the adventures that remind us why we fell in love with riding in the first place.
It’s about faith, resilience, second chances, and recognizing that sometimes life teaches its hardest lessons when we least expect them.
Every mile has a story. Every ride teaches something.
And sometimes the greatest lessons we learn on a motorcycle have nothing to do with riding at all.
